the perfect clipless pedal
the only thing not perfect about them is that if you're wearing regular shoes and the pedal or shoes are wet, these are fairly slippery. Otherwise, mine have about 30k miles on them (by me alone) and I am the second owner. The bearings are still well adjusted and smooth. I use them on my touring bike/commuter. Shimano products are far superior to most of what competitors offer and replacement cleats are available everywhere.

I have heard that some shoes have tread that interferes with the aluminum body of these pedals. I have not experienced this, but surely worst case scenario you can cut off the bit of offending tread.

Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'
These pedals install easily - just make sure you tighten them down all the way.

They are easy to click into/out of.

The best part is the heavy cage around them. Obviously not something you would want if you're trying to save ounces. But, if you're like me and you happen to smack rocks every once in a while, they'll protect your pedal from getting destroyed.

They come with the standard 51 cleats (single release). Upgrade to the 56 (multi release) and you won't be sorry you spent the extra $15-20.
Shimano PD M545 Pedals
These pedals are great for on the trail, I like them better than my shimano pedals without the cages. But since I am on my 3rd pair for the same reason everytime they break, it's time to look for something else. Everytime they break the "nut" on the outside of the pedal gets stripped and pops off and gets lost and then the cage on the outside just flops around. I have had this happen on the trail twice and although you can continue riding without any trouble you still need to address the issue when you get home, which is the $100 pair of pedals you bought are broke. The "nut" on the outside is just crap it's cast aluminum and not strong at all to with stand the mountain atmosphere.

I give these pedals 4.5 stars for design, but for the ability to ride hard and take a beating they suck and I would not reccomend them for true singletrack riders as they don't last. Which is why I gave them 2 stars for toughness.

Great verastile pedal...period
I owned platform pedals when I first got my mountain bike...then I got clipless pedals which I love, but kids came along and now want to go ride bikes together. These pedals were the answer for me! I can clip in (on either side)when I'm excercising or riding technical track or hop on with the kids with my sandals for a joy ride. Oh...another thing is when you're approaching a part of the trail where you know you might stumble, you can clip out beforehand and still pedal comfortably on the platform so you can put that outrigger foot down quickly!

A splendid pedal!
The Shimano SPD Mountain/BMX Bike Pedal M647 is a nice compromise in versatility and efficiency. A DUAL FUNCTION PEDAL it is plenty strong for a heavier rider and its light platform provides for greater safety in rough terrain as a rider can be clipped out and yet still have control. It is good in the mud as well. Check them out!

Best commuter pedal ever
I've been using these pedals for four years, and they've been consistently great. They're incredibly easy to clip into, and flip into proper position almost instantly. Clipping out is totally natural. Most importantly, if you're in tight traffic (middle lane of 6th Avenue in midtown Manhattan at rush hour, for example), and need to clip out for an instant because of some hazard ahead, it's possible to maintain total control using the flat of the pedal until you have the space/speed/security to clip back in. I find the M647s to be totally practical whether I'm pulling a heavy trailer or traveling light. I've recommended the pedals to many friends.

They're comfortable with street shoes too.

Best clipless ever for me!
I used Shimano M324 for 3 years and just upgraded to these. It's expected that the new top of the line XTR would be better in every way. These pedals didn't disappoint! I was almost used to "hot spots" on the ball of my shoe at the cleat. I've had none of that in the rides since switching. The platform of these pedals provides a pretty wide point of contact under your foot. I feel more stable and strong power transfer into the pedal on strokes.

If you've used SPD cleats before- these work the same. I adjusted the tension to be "loose" so I could rapidly unclip if I needed to get free. It's very natural & quick to snap in or snap out. (I didn't unintentionally unclip one time) My rides since the upgrade have all been dry ground, so I can't speak to how they'll perform in heavy mud and gunk.

I think these pedals look great, have low weight (for so much material) and work perfectly.

Shimano XTR PD 985 Pedals that worked as expected
Right off the bat on my first ride in it, the pedal passed the test on one of my muddiest ride after the rains in So Ca. Obviously we had to walk some part in the mud to minimize trail damage and it was all sticky. The four hour ride did not allow us to clean our shoes, pedals and tires thoroughly. And where ridable, I never experienced problems clicking in and out of this pedal despite it being packed with clay mud. The cleats or shoe just pushed the muck out with ease. Cleaning the pedals after the ride with mild flowing water was easy. Just like cleaning any pedal, you may need to nudge off any dried up mud with a stick, plastic rod or something similar. Moist clay would clear smoothly from tight spaces. Re oiling was easy after drying. Since you will only want to spend once on pedals, you won't be disappointed. I give it a 5 star for not having to worry about clicking in and out of my pedals during the entire ride.
Excellent Pedals
These pedals are definately high quality. They work great. Clip right in and clip right out with no problems at all. The only reason I rate a 4 star instead of a 5 star is because when comparing these to the XT pedals, there is very little difference. Definitely not enough difference to make up the considerable price jump. My wife got the XT pedals and I couldn't tell the difference. If I were to buy again, I would buy the XT pedals only because they are half the price and pretty much identical in every way. With the XTR pedals, you're basically paying double for the "r" tacked on to the XT.

Don't get me wrong, I love the pedals. I just recommend going with the XT's to get virtually the same product for half the price.
