Nice Mountian Bike for the Money.
I bought the Mongoose Impasse because it fit my budget for a full suspension 29'er mountain bike. I felt the bike was a bit of a gamble, because detail specs and reviews are just not available. But I was feeling adventurous and ordered one.

First, the bike was rather poorly packed in the Mongoose factory box. No Styrofoam packing was in the box to protect delicate pieces like the rear derailleur, or the wheel hubs. The bike came partially assembled with the front wheel tie wrapped to the frame. Just a little bubble wrap, and a few plastic protectors for the hubs that were broken and laying in the bottom of the box. As a result, the rear derailleur and mounting point were badly bent in shipping by Fed Ex. So I removed the derailleur, straightened it out, and also straightened the mounting point (near the axle drop outs). Took about an hour to get the parts back in proper alignment.

My new mountain bike
I just recieved my new Mongoose Impasse 29" mountain bike.

I haven't riden it yet due to illnes but I'm anxious. It was easy to assemble for someone handy with a few tools. It required a metric wrench, metric hex "allen" wrench and a screwdriver.

There was no recomended rider height for this bike so I took a chance. If your jeans are over 32" long you'll be OK, I'm a little short but I'm keeping it. All the faux componants are there for a $1000+ bike and they look good.

I'm a little sensitive to false advertising so when I noticed the "ALUMINUM MONGOOSE" sticker attached to the "STEEL" rear suspension fork it set off my BS detector. The front fork is also steel which might be understandable for strength. The steel kickstand should have been aluminum even though it's not part of the frame. The seatpost,rims, stem and handlebars are aluminum. Overall my bike and I could stand to loose a few pounds but we'll work on that together. One of the plastic...
Worth the money, but needs tuning to ride nice.
Bike arrived ok. Not hard to assemble. First impression was it was so hard to peddle compared to my other bikes. Turns out the brakes needed adjustment so they were not dragging. That and a few more lbs in the tires makes it much easier to ride. But it is a little on the heavy side, specs list it as 46LBS, which is not bad considering it is a huge 29" bike with a bigger frame, longer fork, extra beefy reinforcements, etc. I enjoy riding it now. Going to get a handle bar water bottle mount.

Good Bike, Poor Seller...
I bought the bike in anticipation that it would be in the RED color that was specified. Instead, the package arrived and I was surprised to see a black frame inside. I thought to myself, hmm... strange. At that point, I put the bike together with no hassle really. (I am a bike mechanic, so this is second nature) The only problem was that the front derailler was a bit too small, but a little tweak to enlarge it and everything shifted well. I have to say that I hate Grip Shifters. Just dispise them. I got the bike for my dad and I had a few requirements: Disk Brakes, 29er mountain bike, Shocks, under $300. This fit the details and the price is right.

For my dad, it is enough to get by with for another 10 years. I personally own a recumbent trike (Catrike 700) and this is way lower in quality than my trike, but hey, it isn't the same by any means. The brakes are disks, but I'd rate them to be as strong as rim brakes, a bit spongey at times. I can't lock the rear wheel to skid...

The quality corresponds to price
The bike is +-ok, but quality of some parts isn't too high: the manufacture uses the cheapest bottom bracket, disk brakes and fork.
- the Zoom disk brakes was installed instead of Promax, and I have strong feeling that Promax should works better;
- the fork works like rigid one;
- the bottom bracket doesn't have enough oil and works very hard.

So, this is the good bike for beginner, who wants to test 29er. But I don't recommend to buy and use this Mongoose as real MTB.
Nice Bicycle
This is a very nice bicycle for the money. I would have given it a 5 star except for shipping damage. The box was dinged up from shipping and the parts were able to move around and the front wheel spokes became tangled on the pedal shaft. I had to work on it a bit to get the spoke off without damage. The reflector that was mounted in the spokes was broken adn had fallen off. I did not ask for a new one.

The assembly was quick and easy without reading the directions. After pumping air into the tires the bike was ready to ride. It was a gift for my rather tall 14 year ol, 6' 4" tall and he fit nicely onto the seat.

Very nice bike at a great price.
