Good product but I have to baby it a little.
A good product but I have to baby it a little. When I use this filter I also bring along a fine mesh filter. (a permanent coffee filter worked best for me because its a perfect fit on the opening of my camelback)I use the container brought along to store the coffee filter as a scoop.I strain the water throught the coffee filter into a spare 100oz camelback bladder.Then I use the Katayn filter to treat my drinking/cooking water from the spare bladder. When I tried to use the Katadyn as advertised,it had one drawback.The prefilter system ie,inlet hose mesh filter & sedement filter clogged very easely even in the sierras.This made it very hard to pump even after I cleaned both filters.(as best I could in the middle of nowhere) I like the Katadyn, it will make clean water and lots of it, if you strain the water before you use it. All filter systems have drawbacks even UVs and the couple extra steps I take are no big deal to me. I can make 200oz of water in about 5-10 min depending on...

Great product.
I use this product while i am up hiking in Idaho. And honestly i love It. I had asked my wife for a pro version of this to replace an older version i had. she got me this at first I was a bit disappointed but after three multi day hiking trips and not having to use iodine pills(though i still take them just in case). i do not even think of going anywhere without it.

A few things. The water in Idaho is relativity clean as we don't have many muddy streams / rivers / lakes. So i can not tell you how this product would work in say Missouri where the waters color seams to be brown to black. But here where the water is clean it almost never clogs. it pumps relativity fast and the water taste amazing! Seriously if you could bottle some of the water filtered through this and sell it you might make a fortune.

Anyway i can not rave enough about this. And i recommend it to everyone wanting a hiking filter!
Outstanding quality!
Perfect water filter for backpacking, day hikes, or on bicycle trips into the backwoods. It's light weight and made to last. There are terrific how-to videos for this filter on YouTube. I am very impressed with this filter! A great value and terrific service.

Clean Water in the Amazon
I recently went to the Ecuadorian Amazon and spent a week living in the rain forest with indigenous people. I went on long treks and relied on the Vario to deliver drinking water from streams I passed on the way. The fact that I never got sick is a testament to the effectiveness of the Vario.
It was easy to hook up directly to my CamelBak, so there was no chance of contamination. Whenever I used it, I had it in the "longer life" setting where you pump a little less water per minute, but it passes through both filters inside. I've used several other filters and the speed and ease which I was able to fill up my 100oz Camelbak is far superior to any of them. The pumping motion is easy to use and it pumps a lot more water even on the "Longer life" (slow) setting than other filters.
Overall I think it is a fantastic product that I would recommend to anyone traveling to locations where you don't know if you can trust the water.

Good overall, but slightly cumbersome to use
I agree with consensus of prior reviews that it's good all around, faster than other models, but has some issues w/back pressure & leaking if you pump too fast or while using the "faster flow" setting instead of "longer life". The faster setting bypasses the ceramic filter (your biological nasty filter) and uses only the charcoal (some bio, chemicals & taste, like your average Brita filter).

I bought this instead of Katadyn's Pocket Microfilter (found for $179 on some sites at the time) for 4 main reasons:

1) ability to attach directly to Nalgene bottle. I'll be using this primarily while living overseas in areas w/questionable tap water, so this is a nice convenience. Don't think the Pocket filter allows this.

2)2-stage filter w/activated charcoal to remove chemicals, pesticides & bad taste. This option isn't available w/the ceramic-only Pocket Microfilter, and again was something I want specifically due to where I'm going. If chemicals aren't an...
Poor durability
The inlet connector broke after the first day of our 7 day canoe trip. We are not rough with our filters as we have had our other filter for several years with no issues like this. We just wanted something that wouldn't clog so quickly.

We spent the rest of the trip either floating in the water next to or leaning over the side of the canoe with the filter submerged to enable us to pump clean water. Also, there is a little plug under the ceramic filter that will stop all water flow if it gets pushed in. This seemed to happen if the pressure in the filter built up by pumping too quickly. We had to disassemble and reassemble the filter several times to correct this issue.

When the filter was working, it was fast and filtered very well. The ceramic pre-filter was great. The water was clean, clear and tasted great. If this filter was more durable I would give it 4 or 5 stars.

Hope this helps anyone in the market for a water filter.

Buy this - you shouldn't skimp when it comes to health & safety
Great product. Extremely compact and easy to use. This is the gold standard - worth the extra money.

Two suggestions:
1. Make sure you know exactly which hoses go where before you start attaching them. They can be very difficult to remove once you put them on.
2. BE SURE to use the silicone lubricant when attaching the hoses. I tried to put one on without it and it was 10x harder to connect.

Pond Water Never Tasted Better!
I used this for a recent mountain climbing trip and I worked perfect. The water coming out of the lake and rivers tasted great.

The only thing I would suggest to improve the product would be some sort of rubber washer or seal of some kind for the bottle topper part so that it's not just loose and dangling around the top of a bottle when it's filling. Because you'll have one hand on the unit and the other hand on the pump when using it so you need something to hold the topper part to the bottle you're filling. You could just put the hose directly into the bottle or whatever though without that part if you need.

Another thing I couldn't really figure out how to do was get the rest of the water in the pump out before sealing it all back up in the bag. I tried upside down pumping (even though I think I read somewhere not to do that). It seemed like the handle didn't want to close all the way before it was empty of water and then later on while hiking any leftover...
Katadyn Hiker Pro Microfilter Review
The product worked well when I first used it on a 3 day hiking trip. Unfortunately, a small piece broke on the second day. Another guy I was with had a filter as well (the same model) so my broken filter didn't cause a problem with our hiking trip.

When I got back, I called Katadyn about the broken filter. In less then a minute on the phone, they agreed to send me a new housing case for the filter. Katadyn's service was awesome! I haven't got a chance to use the product again.
