About Allen Bike Racks:
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Good Value
I purchased the Allen Deluxe 5-bike rack in November 2009. I spent about 15 hours researching bike racks on the Internet and at several retail outlets. I settled on the Allen after comparing features and value between five of the major competitors. I mounted the rack to a 2009 Honda Odyssey. I've used the hitch to carry two adult and two kids bikes for several local trips and one 200+ mile trip. The bikes loaded easily (even the bike used by my 4 year old). The couplings swivel, allowing small bikes to attach with out a crossbar. I added a few bungee cords for my own peace of mind on the longer trip and to reduce sway. The only flaw with the product thus far is that I was unable to put the pin back in the hole after I tilted the rack with the bikes attached. The weight of the bikes appeared to put too much downward pressure on the rack causing misalignment of the holes. A longer pin that could be manipulated better or a second person pushing up on the rack may help. The...

Buy the premium model!
Our previous Allen bike rack lasted about 5 years so we had no hesitation buying another. We decided to replace it because it was getting rusty and some of the straps were broken and we were planning a very long drive for vacation. We chose this deluxe model instead of the premium model which is what we had previously. Both hold 5 bikes without a problem and there is no difference in the actual rack as far as I can see - they are excellent. However, I have found that was MUCH easier for me to manipulate the old premium model to raise it up and lower it down to open the back of our SUV. Right now, my husband can do it with the occasional help of a hammer, but I can't manage it at all. I definitely wish I had spent the extra money and bought the model we originally had. :( Don't make the same mistake!
Perfect bike rack for a big family
This is a great bike rack if you have a big family. We had it on the back of a 30' RV with all 5 bikes on it for 2 weeks and traveled almost 3,000 miles and it held up perfectly under that very rough ride! Easy to attach the rack to the vehicle and also easy to secure the bikes to the rack. Would recommend to anyone who needs to haul a lot of bikes.

Thule 2 Bike Rack
This product works well, but if you plan to keep your bikes secure you will have to make some changes. First of all, if you build it according to the manufacturer's instructions, your bikes can be stolen easily. This product offers ZERO security, making it useless if you plan to stop somewhere before you take the bikes off the rack. The pin is a joke, the system requires the user to literally bolt the rack to the hitch, which is totally impractical, furthermore anyone with a wrench can steal both your bikes and your bike rack. In order to secure the rack to the car, I drilled out the threads making the hole larger so it could accept a lockable pin which would secure the bike rack to our vehicle. Given the thickness of the metal, I had to invest in a $45 drill bit, making this bike rack much more expensive.

If security is not an issue for you, then by all means this bike rack will work for you, I don't think that the pin that holds the rack to the hitch will hold up, so...

This is a great bike rack for the weekend warrior
Read all the reviews and got this bike rack, we are going to use it on two different vehicles. The rack arrived in two days and was ready to go out of the box, followed the directions and attached to vehicle without any problems. Put the bikes on the rack and check to see what else I needed. The bikes did not move once attached, also the bikes have a heavier frame than racing bikes so they fit tighter to the rack. No problem. I purchased a locking pin for the receiver and a lock system for the bikes to lock to the rack, the few extra dollars for locks was to insure no theft on trips and make the vaction and fun time worry free. This is a great rack for those who don't want to spend a lot to get started. Excellent choice.
Horrible rack
This is a terrible rack. It does not hold the bikes on securely as the straps are weak. I've have several scary highway moments. Plus, it does not separate the bikes and scratches and dings your bikes. It is poorly designed. Additionally, you have to buy a locking hitch pin to make it secure. Do not buy it unless you want to ruin your bikes.

Great, very well made rack !!
Very sturdy, well made, well designed, heavy duty rack. Easily carries two bicycles and a tandem!! Receiver bolt draws it tight to the receiver, so no swaying. I have it on the back of a pickup and you don't even know it's there. It swings down so the tail gate opens and it does double duty as a kayak support. I have a locking cable extending to the receiver, so bikes and rack stay secure. Well worth the money, wish I had bought this sooner !

Awesome Bike Rack!
Great 4-bike rack at a great price. Light enough for me to easily put on and off by myself, as a 47 year old woman, but very sturdy. Easy to snug bikes up, anti-sway works well. I can even open my back hatch on my Lexus 330, without hitting it. Get a pad lock to replace the Carter key, and it is secured to your hitch. But you still need to lock your bikes onto the rack with a cable, if you leave them. Excellent product!

Excellent value
This was a great purchase and a terrific value for the dollar. If you're planning to buy the accompanying lock system, please double check to ensure you order the threaded version. The standard 2" lock will not work with this model.
Bike rack
Purchased this for our 3 bikes, with room to spare in case we had visitor / guest come with us. Easy to install and thus far very good. Didn't come with a locking bolt for attachment to the hitch, just a bolt / nut. So had to order that separately--not that someone would necessarily get their wrench out to steal, but hey, you never know. With a few tweaks (e.g. tightening the butterfly screw on the vertical bar), this rack is very quiet and feels relatively secure, a whole hell of a lot better that the usual tie on rack which, regardless of brand, always sucked to some extent. Find it a little wobbly at the top, but need to tighten with a (LARGE) allen wrench. Have to say that 4 bikes is near impossible, but 3 os OK. If you want 4 bikes, buy a 5-rack version :))

Great! No Issues!
This has worked out great for me! I have it installed on my Toyota Tundra 2" hitch and being able to drop the tailgate and move the bikes out of the way has proved invaluable in the 15 rides I have take the wife and kids on.

My youngest duaghter has a smaller frame (26") and I am using a Saris extension bar to be able to mount hers on the rack. Her bike sits a bit awkward but gets on easily.

I have a road bike (Canondale CAAD 9) and a Trek 1200 road bike, one has the cables over the main bar and the other unning underneath the main bar. The rubber straps simply slide "underneath" the cables where they run over the bar on the Trek 1200. On the CAAD 9, the cables are far enough apart that their is no issue and the bike fits nice and snug and does not mover or the fear of getting scratched. The fold down seat post clamp makes the whole thing very stable when using the 3 straps.

Awesome Hitch
When I found out that a regular trunk hitch was not going to work on my 2011 Equinox I was nervous. I knew I needed a hitch mount now but didn't want to sacrifice losing access to my hatch cargo space. Having a toddler we carry a stroller with us and I didn't want a bike rack that needed to be taken off and put on just to carry our bikes. When I came across this one I was very happy to know that Yakima had a bike rack that swung open. Not only do I now have full access to my rear cargo space, I can leave the rack on year round and not have to worry about removing it. It's so easy to operate that my wife has no issues with it at all. Rack is very sturdy with our bikes on it.

One thing that I bought optional because it did not say came with it was a receiver lock pin. But in fact this rack includes ones. It utilizes a anti rattle receiver pin. You actually have to screw it in and then it has a lock on the other side. So if you this one, do not buy a optional locking receiver...
Multiple design flaws
- an error in the first assembly instruction forced me to call the store to see how the hitch bolt and washers went in
- it's VERY difficult to screw in the swing-out arm each time you open it. the salesperson took over five minutes to do it, and it still took me three minutes on my 3rd try.
- the hitch pin lock doesn't fit with the cotter pin on [no biggie, but the instructions say to put the pin on first]
- it includes two tools that fit the arm bolt, but not one for the hitch bolt
- although the Yakima book said it would fit on my 2007 Toyota RAV4, it didn't [because of the external spare tire], so I had to get an extension piece for the hitch or return the rack [which I did, so I can't tell you how it actually works. the salesperson said it works well, but that you can only get 3 bikes on it]
- the built-in cable bike lock doesn't slide into its slot, so 15" of it sticks out

Bike Rack Exceeds Expectations.
This rack is advertized as easy to put together out of the box, and easy to use once you are ready to to ride. Both of these statements are completely true. We have one man's and one woman's comfort bikes and the different length center main clamps of the rack are perfectly suited to these differences in bike design. The rack is very easy to insert and lock into our trailer hitch and the bikes are extremely easy to load requiring only a minimal lift and support to set and lock them into the rack. Definitely truth in advertising!

Awesome value for the buck!
After shopping around everywhere on-line, including the classified and auction sites, this was the best deal in a reliable bike rack I could find. Combined with free shipping, it ended up being less than half of the price of the alternatives! This rack is really solid and very quick to take the bikes on and off. It is especially nice that the vertical bar can be rotated flat. This allows quick and painless access into the back of hatchback vehicles without having to remove the rack. A lot of good engineering thought went into this device.

There are two minor points that prevent this item from having five stars. First, beware of the ratcheting top clamps, as they can be a real finger pincher if you are not careful. Second, even though the rack goes together painlessly and quickly, it would be better if the documentation discussed the more subtle but nice features and the best ways of loading and using the rack. Bought on Amazon. Best price anywhere by far. Goes together in a snap and what I really like is how it folds up for easy storage. I can take it off the hitch and stow it in the vehicle when I am off riding. I like the way it supports the bike from below as opposed to having bikes hanging by their frames. Well thought out design, and even the locking (clevis pins) are attached by a small cable to keep from loosing them. Swagman sells an extension to add two more bikes if you need it. I only carry one bike, and have room to carry a second if someone wants to join me on a ride. I highly recommend this carrier.

Would highly recommend this rack to anyone.
Perspective: I am a mother of three young boys ages 8, 6 and 3. So when we go out as a family we have an adult men's bike, an adult women's bike and, at the moment, 2 youth boys bikes. We are not avid bicyclists, so we don't have any of the fancy, lightweight, more thin-framed bikes. Just your run of the mill Wal-Mart brand, bulky kids and adult bikes. This is our second 5-bike bicycle rack in as many years and I LOVE this one so much more than our last for multiple reasons. We attach it to our Honda Odyssey with a 2" hitch.

1) This rack not only has a ball joint (for lack of a better word) to hold the pivoting arm in place, but it also has a locking pin. DOUBLE the protection. I feel much safer with this mechanism should I ever repeat my previous mistake with our first bike rack, although not likely. :)

Good value
Just got this rack to replace a Yakima 4-bike carrier with the swing away feature. The Yakima rack was outstanding. Here's how this one stacks up (IMO)

Initial impression:
Looks okay, overall construction is not nearly as stout as the Yakima which weighs probably 15-20 pounds more. Release levers, pins, etc. don't feel as solid.

Attaching to vehicle:
Pretty straight forward. Slide the rack into the receiver and tighten with 2 3/4" sockets. Yakima was slightly easier as you only need one wrench to tighten.
Rack does not sway side to side, but does have some up and down play, as did the Yakima. One downside is that the lock for this rack is quite pricey. Don't forget the lock is only a deterrent. A smart and determined thief can walk away with most of your rack even if it's locked.

Loading bikes:
Quite a bit easier with this rack. The Yakima cradles are significantly larger and use bulky rubber straps. It's easier to...
Very pleased
After comparing features and prices of different bike racks, we went with the Allen. I was pleasantly surprised that it does, in fact, accommodate 5 bikes. A little jockeying is necessary to get seats and handle bars to fit with each other when the bikes are different sizes and styles, but they all go on - and it is much much easier the second time. Do not attempt to lower the rack with the bikes already on it. The lowering feature is good for gaining access to the back of the car, but you have to have the bikes off in order to bring it back up again and get the pin inserted. The convenience features of the premium model are well worth the few extra bucks. Rather than wrestling with a pin for each function, the latches that come with the premium model make it much easier.

Good Rack for Frugal Buyers
Let me begin by stating that I bought this rack at Pep Boys after reading one of the negative reviews (there's irony for you). After using the Allen Deluxe 4-Bike rack last week to haul two bikes from Baltimore, MD to Brunswick, ME (12 hours), then four bikes from Brunswick to Acadia National Park (3 hours), plus round trips and the time we spent in Acadia, I can say this inexpensive rack performed admirably. For the most part, the pros and cons supplied by other reviewers seem fair. (Although why you would want to fold down a rack with 4 bikes attached is beyond me, probably because of my lack of strength.)

Installation: My husband and I had a hitch installed on our 2001 Pathfinder specifically to take our inexpensive hybrid bikes to Acadia. The guy who installed the hitch, Bob, also assembled the rack in about 10 minutes; he's used to assembling Thule racks, so he's experienced but it didn't look terribly difficult. Bob didn't like the "sway" and recommended a locking pin...

Allen Hitch Mount 4-Bike Rack
I purchased this product based on the Star Rating and a few reviews. This product does work as advertised and we have been using it for a couple weeks now. If you are hauling 4 bikes, it will be a rather tight squeeze to get the bikes on the rack. Hauling 2 bikes is a breeze and it works great for that. I'm not sure why bike rack manufactures don't put more space between the mounting positions. The straps that hold the bikes in are not great quality and will probably break after a year or 2 of use (I say this from using another rack that had the same type of mounting straps). The rack should be able to be put together with in less than an hour. 1 person should be able to assemble the rack, however having a second set of hands will definitely help. I give this only 3 stars because of the lack of spacing for 4 bikes, if you are going to haul 4 bike regularly, I would advise looking elsewhere (although, if your cheap and don't mind a little hassle getting your bikes on and off...
Good (but not perfect) Rack
At first, I must admit that I thought that the two bars holding the bikes would not be strong enough to support all of the weight of my MTB bikes. But, after several trips to the local trails, I'm glad to report that it's been a very solid rig.

On the down-side (if you could call it that), you must remove a retaining pin when tilting the bike rack down in order to open your SUV Hatch. It can be a bit of a hassle if you're doing this a half a dozen times per day. I noticed that with Thule Racks (for example), they have a 'quick release' tab that tilts the rack down with a flick of the wrist. This seems to be a far superior method.

Other than that, I've been very satisfied with this product and would probably buy it again considering the great price.

If you have a 1-1/4" receiver you'll want to read this review
I love this bike rack. The price is very reasonable and its build-quality I consider top-notch with all holes and welds being quite precise. The design has clever features that were new to me, such as being able to fold down the bike support arm when not in use so one doesn't accidentally run into it and also the ability to fold down the whole rack allowing quick and easy access through the rear door. The strap cinching system seemed cheap and goofy at first but after using it a few times I've now become quite adept at strapping and unstrapping the bikes to where it only takes a few seconds for me to do so. I now feel its quite clever in that this strapping system will accommodate any size bike tube (unlike some other bike racks I've had in the past). Its important to note that the spacing between the supports is quite wide at 14" and that might limit its use for smaller bikes, as our adult bikes just barely fit (with <2" to spare). I did run into an issue that I've noted...

Inexpensive, but cheap
This is the least expensive hitch mounted rack I could find anywhere.

The item arrived whole and the instructions are very clearly written, but not well illustrated.

Assembly was fast, but in putting the two larger parts together, I found it easy to tighten the bolts too much, thereby chipping the paint. The metal gave slightly, and the paint around the bolts came right off, but the pieces are definitely securely fastened.

The two included cotter pins are good, but the fasteners on the ends are a little flimsy.

Attaching to the hitch is straightforward. There's a two piece sleeve that goes over the 1.25" pipe to make it a proper 2" male end. Attaching the 'no wobble' bolt required two wrenches and upon tightening it to the maximum I was unpleasantly surprised that there was so much vertical movement of the rack in the hitch. It definitely does not wobble side to side, and the torsion is minimal to non-existent, but it is a little...
Great bike rack, a little high on the price.
Great bike rack all around. Easy to assemble, just make sure you have the tools to do so. The locking washers are a pain without the proper wrenches. The "anti-wobble" bolt to make sure the rack doesn't sway from side to side is a little difficult to install, and it took me a few tries to get it right, but now it is rock solid and won't move anywhere. The fold down mechanism works like a charm, you just have to make sure you don't tighten the two bolts at the top too much or it will be really difficult to move.

Positives:

+ Very sturdy
+ Holds the bikes very well

Negatives:
- Wal-Mart has the same rack for $23 cheaper at the time of this review (which I found out AFTER the fact, come on Amazon!) Edit: 11/19/2010 - Wal-Mart has since removed the 3-bike version of this rack on their website.
- Instructions could be a bit more clear, but they have a great instructional video on the company website.
