This is better than I thought!!!
This Yakima double down hitch bike rack is excellent quality. It truly needs no tools to instal to your car's hitch. It locks so no one can steal it. If you lock your bikes then you can have peace of mind that your bikes won't be stolen either. It folds down very easily and smoothly to get into your car's hatch. The arms that carry the bikes fold down very easily to that the whole piece is tucked behind your car and won't give you or others any hard time parking or guessing how much room the hitch is sticking out. An extra bonus is that both tips have bottle opener features. I'm not a drinker, but, hey pretty cool. I am very pleased with this rack. It fits both my mountain bikes without scratching them. The rubber tethers are strong and really lock down bikes. I'm so glad I waited to get this rack instead of a much more expensive one being sold at my local bike shop.

Make life so much easier.
I've struggled with 4 different strap mounted bike racks before breaking down and buying this guy. It couldn't be easier to mount bikes. Before installing this rack, I timed how long it took to attach my old rack and mount 2 bicycles - 16 minutes. Then I timed the Yakima. 2.5 minutes! Great design. I did have to purchase and install a trailer hitch for my Prius to except the Yakima. This not a cheap solution for transporting bicycles on your car, but if you do it a lot, it's certainly worth every penny.

Nice rack
Just purchased this and I'm very happy with it so far.

Ease of Use:
It was easy to install (attached to Yakima round bars) and is incredibly easy to load the bike. The bike remains very stable even at fast highway speeds (~80mph).

Security:
The rack is only secure if you purchase the sold separately SKS lock core.

I've seen some complaints about the security of the fork skewer even with an SKS lock installed, but it seems reasonable to me as long as the bike is loaded. Technically, if the skewer were not tight enough, even with the skewer closed against the fork dropouts and the lock engaged, you could twist the adjustment collar on the skewer to loosen it and eventually remove it. I am not able to do this with my setup, so I'm not worried about it. If a bike is not loaded on the rack, however, the security would be pretty much useless. One could twist the adjustment collar until the axle of the skewer unscrewed, remove the skewer, then...

Very nice product, LOVE IT
We LOVE this roof top rack. Bike was wobbly at first but my husband realized he didn't have the rack tightened down as much as it should be to the truck. Problem solved. We have 5 kids so there is 7 bikes in all. The bike is very sturdy up there. I am looking to buy another one now.(and a hitch rack) We have a yukon so as a women I don't think I cld put my bike up there but my husband is 6'5". So the height of your vehicle and your height depends if this really works for YOU. You also need an easy release front wheel. Otherwise this would be a pain to have tools w you to remove your wheel. I would have 4 of them if that wouldn't be to pricey but for my budget it would be. we did have to buy a lock separately for it, you don't have to have this but if you plan on leaving your bikes unattended its a good idea.

Ordered this carrier since trailer hitch carriers would not allow me to fully open my rear storage compartment on the Jeep Wrangler. Have had spare tire mount carriers before and they weren't very sturdy and the bikes "swung". This is totally different. Mounts to the same mounting point as the spare tire itself and has additional tie-downs that extend down the frame to minimize "swinging". Works perfectly. Easy to install. Company shipped quickly and product arrived in good condition. Great transaction. Thanks.

I read the other reviews in Amazon and was somewhat cautious about this purchase only because of the "issues" that others were experiencing with the install. I have a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and the install took me only 20 minutes (at least for my vehicle and model). Lug pattern on the spare mount fit the rack mount perfectly. I re-installed the tire and then then the rack itself in no time. I was surprised at the ease of the install and was very happy with the outcome. I purchased this to replace a receiver mounted Thule rack which interfered with the rear door of the Jeep. This rack not only allows for the function of my door it also LOOKS FANTANSTIC and is VERY ROBUST. I am a mechanical engineer and I can tell you that the design of this item was very well thought out. The bike will not rock during transit since the rack is in contact directly to the spare tire sidewall. The tie downs are a high durometer rubber and fit tight. Yakima Sparetime for 2006 RAV4 Limited
Had a rough start with the Sparetime. Very strong husband needed an extra measure of patience to get the tire to fit over the mount. It took two hours and we were literally about to repackage the product for return when we thought of one last appraoch. There is absolutely no wiggle room because of the RAV's unique lip combined with the Limited's rims. We had to basically lift the mount from the bottom with strong tape to convince the tire to fit over the mount and the lip. We could only get two screws through at first, but once we started tightening those two the third screw decided to cooperate and we were able to finish mounting the rack securely. We also had one strap break on the first use. However, a quick email to Yakima and we had a free replacement within a few days - no hassle at all. We have been using the rack for several weeks, including for a few long distance road trips. The bikes are completely secure and don't move an inch. We love it and even my husband admits it was...

Good Bike Rack but know what you're buying into...
I purchased this roof bike rack from a retailer, so the price on Amazon is about $20 less (each)... so you get a better deal on Amazon. I'm not a bike specialist and this is my first bike roof rack. I also had this rack installed onto the base rack onto my car by the retailer. The process took a little less than an hour.

I would have preferred a hitch rack installed on the rear of my car but I learned my car (MINI Clubman) is a bit difficult to install a hitch. You would have to take the rear bumper off and the two rear tire fenders... install the hitch and put everything back together. I wasn't in the mood to chance it since my car is new and installation of a hitch + bike rack and all its accessories would've got me in the $1,000 range. The hitch would've come in handy though. Here's why:

If you're short like me, having a bike rack on the roof of your car is a bit of a chore. It's certainly possible, but imagine yourself lifting your bike over your head...

Simple and Works
I can't believe how simple bike racks have gotten. This thing is secure and simple to install. The best part is that there are no loose parts to track. Awesome design.
Great Bike Rack... Just be tall!
Let's start this off with a few simple facts:
1. I'm ~6'6" tall and fit
2. I've used this rack for more than 2 days (about 4 months now)
3. I have 2 of these racks
4. Thes bikes that I've put on them are a medium frame Hard Tail and an XL frame Hard Tail
5. I'm using a Honda Crosstour with the Honda roof brackets installed

Given these facts, this has been a very good rack for my purposes. Though others may have a problem if they're not strong enough to lift their bike by fork and frame above their head, and safely/stably place the bike in the Frontloader. The Crosstour is not a tall car when compared with an SUV, so I would only trust this to shorter cars with tall individuals loading and unloading, or medium to medium-tall cars with a forklift.

The rack holds the bikes secruly in place, but be warned... If there is any curvature to your crossbars (as there is in the case of the Honda Crosstour crossbars, the bikes will appear as though...

Awesome Bike Rack
I got the Yakima KingJoe Pro bike rack after looking all over the internet and bike shops in my area. I looked at all the reviews on the different websites and was struggling to find a great bike rack without spending to much. One of the great things about the KingJoe is that it fits on both of my cars, so I am not limited to just using with one car like a roof rack. I have used it 7 or 8 times so far, and it clings to my Mazda Protege 5. I haven't worried one bit about my bike while traveling down the freeway or going down bumpy roads. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a truck bike rack. It is well worth the money.

Not for a Chevy Equinox
We never used this product so we can't attest to the quality. Even thought the ad says "ideal for hatchbacks, minivans, and SUVs," when we opened the box and looked at the instructions it clearly states it will not fit a Chevy Equinox. So, before ordering you need to contact the company and find out if it actually will work for your car.
Almost lost my bike!
This bike rack is great save a few major issues. It holds up nicely and is quite durable and is great for trips. However, on my way back from Vacation this year, I nearly lost my bike when the straps snapped en route and my bike was dangling without support for nearly an hour!

I want the seller to contact me because this is basically a new rack that should not have breaking straps at this stage of the game.

A little disappointing
Actually I was a little disappointed with the rack. It fits securely over my Terragate hitch bike rack, but the top opening isn't deep enough to put in a pair of skis back to back if they have binding plates. If you look closely at the photo, you will see that the one ski set has split plates, otherwise you would have to put them in side by side (halving the capacity of the rack). Skis without plates fit OK back to back.

Getting the twin tips in the rack as in the picture requires each ski to be put in the bottom slot separately, then fitted back to back and locked into the top slot. The top slot opens, the bottom slot doesn't - it has 2 wheel screws which widens it slightly.

Also better be sure your vehicle has mud flaps, there is no way to put the skis in a bag with this rack to keep them clean, unless you cover everything in one huge trash bag or motorcycle bag.

Another 1/2" depth on the top slot hinge would have been better. There is a narrow...

Great addition to your Yakima bike rack!
The Yakima Hitchski worked well with my DoubleDown4 bike rack mounted to my Jeep Patriot. Some reviews say the Hitchski causes handling of the vehicle to decrease, but I did not notice a difference in this smaller, 4 cylinder SUV. The skis remained secure even though the bike rack had some bounce to it. Yakima has improved the width of the ski clamps, so loading twin tips is not much of an issue. However, some styles of bindings may limit your ability to clamp down skis as shown in the picture. You may have to clamp in the skis side by side. This limits the capacity, but is not an issue for me because I don't plan on hauling 6 pairs at one time. This rack will never outsell roof mounted systems, but the ease of taking on and off the hitchski is a definite plus. I would recommend this rack to anyone who is looking for a more portable, easier to access ski rack.
User friendly ski rack
I found the Yakima HitchSki 6 to be easy to assemble, easy to mount on the Yakima Hitch Mount Bike Rack and very easy to operate. It only took me 30 minutes from opening the box to locking 3 pairs of ski on my new HitchSki rack and I consider myself mechanically challendged. It also comes with locking devices that allow for peace of mind while your skis are left in the rack. The HitchSki is also secured to the Bike Rack by using the Bike Rack built in locking cable. I definitely recommend this accessory if you enjoy both skiing and biking with the family.

Great! No Issues!
This has worked out great for me! I have it installed on my Toyota Tundra 2" hitch and being able to drop the tailgate and move the bikes out of the way has proved invaluable in the 15 rides I have take the wife and kids on.

My youngest duaghter has a smaller frame (26") and I am using a Saris extension bar to be able to mount hers on the rack. Her bike sits a bit awkward but gets on easily.

I have a road bike (Canondale CAAD 9) and a Trek 1200 road bike, one has the cables over the main bar and the other unning underneath the main bar. The rubber straps simply slide "underneath" the cables where they run over the bar on the Trek 1200. On the CAAD 9, the cables are far enough apart that their is no issue and the bike fits nice and snug and does not mover or the fear of getting scratched. The fold down seat post clamp makes the whole thing very stable when using the 3 straps.

Awesome Hitch
When I found out that a regular trunk hitch was not going to work on my 2011 Equinox I was nervous. I knew I needed a hitch mount now but didn't want to sacrifice losing access to my hatch cargo space. Having a toddler we carry a stroller with us and I didn't want a bike rack that needed to be taken off and put on just to carry our bikes. When I came across this one I was very happy to know that Yakima had a bike rack that swung open. Not only do I now have full access to my rear cargo space, I can leave the rack on year round and not have to worry about removing it. It's so easy to operate that my wife has no issues with it at all. Rack is very sturdy with our bikes on it.

One thing that I bought optional because it did not say came with it was a receiver lock pin. But in fact this rack includes ones. It utilizes a anti rattle receiver pin. You actually have to screw it in and then it has a lock on the other side. So if you this one, do not buy a optional locking receiver...
Multiple design flaws
- an error in the first assembly instruction forced me to call the store to see how the hitch bolt and washers went in
- it's VERY difficult to screw in the swing-out arm each time you open it. the salesperson took over five minutes to do it, and it still took me three minutes on my 3rd try.
- the hitch pin lock doesn't fit with the cotter pin on [no biggie, but the instructions say to put the pin on first]
- it includes two tools that fit the arm bolt, but not one for the hitch bolt
- although the Yakima book said it would fit on my 2007 Toyota RAV4, it didn't [because of the external spare tire], so I had to get an extension piece for the hitch or return the rack [which I did, so I can't tell you how it actually works. the salesperson said it works well, but that you can only get 3 bikes on it]
- the built-in cable bike lock doesn't slide into its slot, so 15" of it sticks out

Good Quality but to small for 2 bikes
I bought this hitch mounted bike rack to fit a medium frame mountain bike and an extra small frame mountain bike. Overall it feels like a solid built rack, however it seems quite small for two bikes. When my 2 bikes are mounted, I have to fiddle around with them to get both of them to fit. I did manage to get both on, but peddles are touching and handle bars through the the other bikes spokes. I tried and there really is no other way for me to mount these bikes.

If I had to do it over again, I would buy the 3 or 4 bike rack, just for the extra room. Also, I bought a master brand hitch locking pin, that does not work with this rack because the hole is threaded. I assume you have to buy the Yakima branded lock with is $15 more than I paid.

This is a solid built hitch mounted rack, I just wish I bought a bigger sized one for the extra room as 2 bikes are really tight on this rack. Check out the Saris Thelma before you buy this one, wish I had.

A true hitch mount solution for any bike rider
The Yakima DoubleDown 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack is most likely the first and last bike rack I will ever own. When the box arrived at my door, it was stamped with Yakima's "Love it till you leave it" guarantee. Right out of the box, it was simple to assemble with easy to follow directions in both English and Spanish - and as I found out later, you can also download the assembly instructions via PDF document (in case they are misplaced) on Yakima's Web site. The tongue adapter allows you to connect the bike rack to a 2 inch receiver/hitch, but since I have a smaller, 1.25 inch mount, all I had to do was remove one screw to slide off the hard-shell outer casing. From assembly to mounting, it took me just over 20 minutes to get it all done. The best part, when bikes aren't attached, is that I can release a locking pin to access the rear hatchback door of my Ford Escape SUV. Also, the supportive upper arm folds down when the rack is not in use.

Double Down Review
This is well built bike rack and you will be pleased should you purchase one. There are only a few issues that you should be aware of:
1. The entire rack and can be stolen off your vehicle in minutes if the "thief" has a pair of pliers or a crescent wrench.
2. Individual bikes can be stolen off the rack in seconds.

The Yakima lockset is inadequate so I recommend the following: Drill two holes through the main post. Chain lock the rack to your hitch and chain lock the bikes to the post.

Yakima Fork Lift Roof Rack
The Yakima Fork Lift Rooftop Bike Rack is so far the best fork mount style rooftop rack that I have seen or used. One of the nicest features with this rack is that it mounts to factory cross bars as well as aftermarket round or square bars. It mounted very easily to my Subaru factory bars. The skewer mechanism is easily tightened and locked with one hand which leaves your other hand free to hold the bike steady or eat a burger. I also added the lock core to ensure that the fork skewer remains closed during travel. I spent way too much time comparing different racks but I am very glad that I purchased this one!

Very Sturdy, even at 80+ MPH
I have this mounted on my 2008 Subaru Impreza STI with OEM Factory bars and the fit is perfect. I had a problem with other racks that were made for either round or square bars. My OEM bars are large and oval-shaped, and this rack had no problems fitting on. The clamps are very sturdy.

I took my mountain bike on a 5 hour drive to Mammoth Mountain from Los Angeles, even hitting speeds of 80+. The rack held up very well. I prefer the fork mounted design of this rack because it seems like a more secure way to mount the bike. I only wish it came with a separate front wheel holder so I didn't have to throw the front wheel in my trunk.
Nice product for use on OEM rack - Horrible warranty experience
I purchased two of these racks for use on the cross bars that come stock on the Subaru Outback (2008 XT Limited in my case.) They assembled relatively easily, but took some time to get the multi-position clamps just right. One position was too tall, so I tried the next, which was too low. Back to the first and adjust a little more. Not hard, just a little time consuming. I had to mount the front crossbar as far forward as possible to avoid the rear of the tray from hitting the wagon's door when open. The tire clears about 1/4"

The rack is easy to use, although since the crossbar as some curve to it, the two bikes tilt out a little bit. The crossbars are plenty secure enough with two 25# bikes on top.

The only problem I had, and which cost this review three stars, was Amazon and Yakima's customer service. The racks are well made, but sometimes parts aren't up to snuff. The second time I used the rack, one of the red plastic covers for the locking skewer came out...
