The Schwinn GTX-2 is a dual sport bike that is fast on the road and dependable off road. Large diameter tires for stability and comfort. Pretty Nice But Different Versions
As far as I can tell, there are three (3) different versions of the same basic bike:

1. GTX-1. Original version. Twist-grip shifters. Black wheels. Solid blue color.
2. GTX-2. Amazon version. EZ-Fire trigger shifters. Natural wheels. Grey/white color.
2. DSB (Dual-Sport Bike). Wal-Mart version. EZ-Fire trigger shifters. Black wheels. Black/white color.

Essentially, the Wal-Mart DSB (the one I have) is the GTX-2 with the GTX-1 black wheels and a black color scheme (instead of grey).

The bike itself (in any version) is pretty nice, comparable with low-end hybrid bikes from other, higher-end manufacturers (like Trek) but with more features at a lower price. Of course, component quality is surely not the same level as a Trek, nor do you get the same kind of support from an LBS that sells Trek bikes.

So, it just boils down to type of shifters, wheel and bike colors as to which one to get.

Awesome!
This review comes from an amateur biker! If you are looking for a bike for professional riding this is below your expected payment. I'm an average rider and really enjoy this bike! I've had no problems, the bike came mostly assembled, all I had to do was put the handles on, screw the pedals on, attach the seat, and put the front wheel on. The brakes are already attached. I do however recommend taking the bike to be maintenance by a bike dealer...unless you are one or know what you're doing. If you live in a place that has a lot of thorns like I do, you will want to purchase the thorn resistant 700c Shrader valve 35-43 48mm, I purchased the sunlite brand, and yes it does matter. I also used the original tubes as an extra liner in the tire for extra protection against thorns! I am well pleased with the results!
Right Side Pedal came off the Pedal arm.
This was a xmax gift for my son. As he was riding it, the pedal came right off and stripped the right side pedal arm. I cannot screw the pedal back inot the arm. How is this possible with a bike of this calibar? I also read a review, about a recall on the GTX-2 in regards to the pedal coming off. Is this so? I will be in contact with the mfgr this week and find out what is behind this
recall rumor and/or if I was a victim of such.

Toddler bicycle seat
We bought two of these based on the brand name Schwinn and they certainly live up to the name. Easy to install, everything fit without modifications. Assembly time probably no more than 20 minutes for the first one and 15 minutes for the second. All you need are a phillips screw driver and 10mm wrench, it's that simple.
As for child safety, the seats seem to be very well thought out with adjustable foot rests and leg straps, dual shoulder straps, and a lap bar. I don't see how your child could possibly get out of this seat once all the restraints are secured.

Lots of Pros only a few Cons
I tried 2 other carriers before this one and it was the best so far. My daughter loves it! I would buy it again.
Just an FYI- the instruction sheet states "Do not use this carrier on bikes with rear suspension" this was nowhere on the box.

Pros:
-Child seat is easy to remove and just leaves the "cargo rack" so if you want to ride without the child you don't have to breakout the screwdriver and wrench (LOVE THIS!)and you can use the cargo rack for other things
-Very heavy duty plastic and stable...other seats were saw were very thin plastic
-Love the headrest extension which is not pictured here but is easy to install and remove based on the child's height
-bar across the seat raises up for easy buckling
-Numerous safety features

Cons:
-My 2 year old daughter was wearing crocs and her feet were too wide for the foot holes. Also, the Velcro straps that go across the shins are a little odd. Side note: My daughter only weighs 26lbs...
Great purchase
I purchased this bike seat so that my husband could pick up my daughter from daycare. It was easy to install and even easier to sit my daughter in the seat. The only issue is that my daughter is so young, 14 months, that when she is wearing a helmet, the back of the seat is pushing the helmet forward, so her head ends up on her chest. We are going without a helmet for now, and once her head clears the top of the seat, the helmet is going back on.
Otherwise, a great buy!

• Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
• Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half, and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
• Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

Superior Satisfactiom
Before Christmas I was halfheartedly shopping around on the Internet looking for a new bicycle. The fixed gear bikes were appealing because of their mechanical simplicity. But at the age of sixty-two, the skinny tires, drop handlebars, and toe-clip pedals no longer hold the same appeal that they once held (when I was younger I gladly purchased a hand-built Italian racing bicycle because the five-time winner of the Tour de France used the same brand and model).
Three days before Christmas I spotted the Schwinn Excursion that had almost exactly all the features that I was looking for. The handlebars are upright (I am more interested now in enjoying the scenery rather than counting pebbles). The tires are not too skinny nor too fat (700CX40C with Schrader valve stems, the valve stems are extra long to accommodate the aerodynamic rims). The pedals are flat and can be used on either side (plus they are metal, not cheap plastic).

My Schwinn Excursion
I bought this bike one month ago and have been using it substantially since then. It comes mostly pre-assembled, yet there is still some assembly required that might pose difficulty for someone with not so much bicycle maintenance under their belts. When I say that it comes pre-assembled, that means that the tires are on the rims and the back wheel is attached to the frame along with the pedals, brakes, chain guard and handle bar stem. You still must still secure everything else to the frame and connect and adjust the gear shift cable.
Everything that was assembled at the factory did need adjusting and tightening. The chain was stretched tight and the brakes wouldn't relax. The clamps holding the chain guard had to be turned in a bit. Contrary to a couple of other reviews, the fenders fit very good and do not rub. I believe the problem they had was because they made the attachment on the wrong side of the front forks. It needs to go on the front side before the brake. If...
Good Ride. Good Value.
This bike is a lot of fun to ride. It only has three speeds, but that is all you need most of the time. Pretty simple to put together (It arrives mostly assembled). All I would say is the instruction book is for all schwinns, not this specific one- so you must be somewhat mechanically inclined to assemble and adjust brakes. The internal shifting mechanism is inside the rear axle and is smooth as butter- very nice shifting. The seat is a little bit "pokey" but I bought a padded schwinn replacement at walmart. I would give this a 5 star as an assembled bike, It handles great. However- the inconsistent assembly instructions make it a 4 star.

comfortable and smooth ride
This bike is a perfect combination of features:

-substantial wheels stand up to cracks and dips in the road
-adjustable handlebars allow for a more or less upright riding position (I love to cruise with a tall straight spine... hate hunching my back on other bikes)
-shocks on the front wheel and under the seat make for a smooth ride despite potholes
-wide comfortable seat doesn't dig in to the wrong "parts"; instead, there's some nice padding under the sit bones
-plastic guard protects pants from getting caught in the chains

I've been riding my new bike to work every day through the city, where I encounter all sorts of conditions; the bike gets me through them all pretty comfortably. Pedaling up hills has never been easier and I don't even have to stand. The brakes are responsive and smooth. This is a hardcore comfort bike.

Good for the price but not great.
Con:
1. weight slightly on heavy side. close to ~40lbs. so going up hill might be little bit challenging.
2. Grip shift is OK but prefer trigger shifter "Schwinn Broadway" has that feature [...]. Faster gear shift with trigger shift.
3. Minor thing but unlike Giant, Kenda tire does not provide "self sealing tube"
4. Water cage position of the bike is too low (awkward position). Instead get a water bladder back pack.

Pro:
1. Good components overall.
2. Comfortable..front shocks and seat shock are mediocre.
3. Good pedals (metallic vs. cheap plastics)
4. Fenders keeping from dirt and other element is good and so is carrying cage.
5. Does come with kick stand

Overall relative good buy but I wouldn't pay more than $300.00 for this bike. Wait until it gets $250 or lower.
Assembly wasn't hard...it took 30 minutes. Didn't even have to read the instruction...well packaged. Allen wrench is all you need.
My first Bike
I am so happy with this bike. The only thing to irked me is it is now $50 less than what I paid for it. But what can I say, I still like this bike. I was a little challenged when I realized there was partial assembly required. I would have liked more directions on putting on the front tire. Once assesmbled I took it to a bike mechanic and had the assembly work checked over and he told me it was all good. I like that the bike as a rear fender rack, I like that it has fenders both front and back. The seat is so comfortable LADIES this is the bike seat for us. I am still getting down shifting, but any problems I have with shifting is about me and not this bike. The handle bar shifters work well. But I can see that sometime in the future I will have thumb shifters installed (this is for the ergonomics of it for me as I am an older bike rider). If you are looking for a versatile bike that can do some urban trail riding and just get you around the neighborhood. Then you will...

Best Schwinn Girl's High Timber Mountain Bike (24-Inch, Blue) For sale

Missing parts
I ordered this bike for my daugther as a Christmas present. Was concerned about the 'assembly required' but was ensured it would not be difficult (pedals, front tire, seat and handlebars).

The shipment did not come with the pedals or the nuts and bolts to attach the front wheel. Luckily we live in KC so it was too cold for a Christmas bike ride. I tried calling Schwinn today, but there offices are closed due to adverse weather. So I'll try back later.

The other issue I had was that the front brake assembly is messed up now as I was trying to get the front tire attached. A part of the brake assembly came loose and I haven't figured out how to adjust. The instruction manual has poor directions and it's difficult to see in the photos what adjustments to make.

So at this point, I can't tell if the bike is a quality product or not. Will try to do a follow up once the missing parts are sent out. For now, I'm giving this a 2 star rating.

Very good deal for the price
It was a very good surprise. I was worried with components quality, so far we have been riding it in all kinds of roads and trails without any issues.

My recommendation to any bike novice is to take the unopened container directly to a professional bicycle shop. It will save you a ton of frustration. For an additional $40; I was able to walk away with a beautiful and comfortable piece of equipment that was both securely assembled and tuned to my liking. At 6'1" 200 lbs 53 years oldI've had a blast cruising the Shore Towns of South Jersey. Compliments galore regarding its suspension and style Another consideration may be investing in a comfort seat unless of course you plan on going completely squirrels off-road. Great Value for those who can forgo an exotic name and its accompanying price tag.

Left Crank Became Loose
I've had this bike for a few months now. I mostly use it to take 10 mile treks on dirt roads in the Florida Everglades. Only guessing but I probably have near 100 miles on this bike. On my last trip the left crank nearly fell off. I'm glad I recognized the looseness before I lost the nut as I was 6 miles in from the road. I read elsewhere that the Truvativ Isoflow drivetrain on this bike is notorious for its left crank becoming loose.

For the rest of the bike, it has been holding up well. There are two pre-threaded holes on the lower part of the frame for an accessory attachment which I have used for a water bottle. I wished they would have provided another pair of holes on the upper part of the frame for an additional accessory.

Update 8/23/09: There was a clamp in the box that I did not realize until now that it goes under seat and pairs up with the height adjustment clamp to provide two attachment points for another accessory. Once attached the seat is no...

Pros: Great components for the price Cons: Heavy
For the quality components that this bike has: 7005 aluminum frame, Hayes Disc brakes, Fox Vanilla rear suspention, Manitou Axel comp 120mm, Shimano LX and Acera, and the truvative cranks, the price cannot be beat! The suspension is very smooth and provides a great ride over rocks and bumps. I love to use the bike for light downhill riding at the Sundance resort in Utah, and short cross country trips up on the Bonneville Shoreline trail. To add to my love for this bike is the Geometry. The bike does not bob like other full suspension bikes, which is important for a more enjoyable uphill riding experience when you need to throw your weight into your pedaling.

The only downside to this bike is its weight. It is a heavier bike, but when you consider it has 120mm (5 inches) of travel it seems a little bit easier to over look it. I think it weighs around 35 pounds. Names like Specialized and Gary Fisher may sell a similar bike that weighs around 24-28 lbs with similar...
Bad deal overall.
I bought this bike mainly because it had good reviews and it's wasn't too expensive. I made a mistake in doing so. When the bike arrived it looked great. After 50 miles of use and the left crank(peddle arm), fell off because the screw fell out. I put it back together making sure the screw was tight, but it keeps falling out every 20 miles or so. The gears on the bike don't switch smoothly and the front gear won't switch to first and the back gear won't switch to eight. The other parts seem ok. Barely rideable though.

A great inexpensive aluminum frame bike with great features for riding around town and hauling stuff home.
The number you are looking for is 35.2 to maybe 35.4 lbs for the weight of this bike, that is as close as my bathroom digital scale could get, and yes this bike does have the Aluminum frame. With it's black paint and "Schwinn" name on it, this is the ultimate sleeper bike, looking like one of those cheap Chinese made bikes that weigh much more with a steel frame, no one will guess this is actually a nice bike. So this is probably the only aluminum frame bike that doesn't have "steal me" written all over it, and is probably going to still be there when you come out of the store even with just a mid-grade bike lock on it. This is a great price for a low end Aluminum bike and it comes with just the right features.

The twenty one speeds are managed with a left hand twist handle grip with three speeds for the front derailer, and a right hand twist handle grip for the rear derailer with 7 speeds. The bike does have the quick release on the front wheel.

Schwinn Discovery has nice quality for the price
I looked at numerous bikes in the price range of $170 to $300 and found that this one gave the best quality and componetry for the money. Some of the other bikes I compared were the Schwinn Lakeshore, Schwinn Gateway, and a couple different lesser known name brand bikes. I also visited a local bike shop to look at a Trek 700, this was a very nice bike but I had to draw the line on how much I spent somewhere and that eliminated this one. The Schwinn Discover was the closest thing I found to the quality and ride to the more expensive bikes like the Trek 700 I could find and Iwas able to pick it up at our local Meijer store for $229. The rims were true and look to be made real well. It shifts fast and sure and has a feel of being really well made and sturdy. The Schwinn Lakeshore felt cheap and cumbersome in comparison.
Just what "Papa" needed!
I was looking for a comfortable bike to use for rides on the street with grand-kids, or running errands locally. This is it! The shocks on the front forks and seat make for a smoother ride. The size of the seat fits my grandpa behind better; and, since I'm 6' 4", the 700C (aka ~29") wheels help there too! Only issue is that the rear fender and luggage rack connections occupy space on the rear hub that contends with the trailer hitch (Schwinn/In-Step). So, I made my own out of andle iron and PVC cap. Has survived two neighborhood trips without noticeable ill effects--if it survives four more, I think I'll make a video "How-To" and send it in.

  Great bike for the neighborhood and park
  My husband bought this bike for me for mother's day and I love it. I like the wide wheels and the ease of use. I can keep up with my kids in the park and in the neighborhood and the gear shifts are easy to use. It also doesn't hurt my back like other bikes where you have to hunch over more. The seat can use a little more cushioning, but otherwise it is a great bike.

  the best womens MTB for $200
  we searched far and wide for a new bike for my daughter. shopped the local bike shop first. i was terribly disappointed to see $389+ for heavy trek and specialized brand chinese made bikes with generic brand components. that's NOT going happen at ALL. i love my local bike shop, but unless they carry a higher quality product... they're not getting my money. bikes in the $350-450 price range use to have air sprung forks, dual wall rims, shimano deore DX or LX components and quality non-threaded headsets. those days are, apparently, long gone.
  
  i happened on the SX2000 at a local one-stop-shop store, Meijer. identical components as the treks and specializeds at the LBS, still made in china, SRAM 3.0 shifters, identical SR suntour front fork. all this, was for $199+ tax. that's nearly half the price! local bike shop, take note!
  
  now... the big advantage for the SX2000 over the "major" brand bikes.... a noticeably lighter aluminum frame. this is a fine...
  Excellent Bike
  Most comfortable bike I have ever had. The price and shipping is great, the packaging is excellent. If you're having issues with the wheel hitting the pedals, you have to adjust the "camber" so that the wheel is angled outward, the earlier reviews are unfair if you take into account that they had to put it a certain way to fit it in the box and you have to adjust it yourself. I love the women-specific design of this bike. I hated how awful my old bike was on my back and butt, this new one was almost worth the old one getting stolen. They can have that back straining thing. Be sure to get a theft resistant u-bar lock and a specialty seat, I got the one recommended with this bike and it's sooooo much better.

Great bike for the price.
You cannot beat this bicycle for the price. It is actually fabricated in the same overseas factories that Giant builds their frames. It also is the same as the entry-level Chinese-imported Trek frame.

As for Mrs. Roberts and her problems......hate to say it, but each and every problem/symptom you described is a symptom/problem indicating a poor assembly and adjustment. You should have taken the bike(s) to a professional bicycle shop and had the mechanic there do a tune-up on your bike....all those problems would and could have been avoided completely. Chain shifting problems, chain-drop and jamming, wheel loose....all adjustment and assembley problems.

Why do I say this? I was a bike mechanic for approx. 7 years and saw many, many bicycles bought from mass-market merchandisers and over the internet with the same exact problems after the poor or unskilled assembly. Even the bikes the "real" bike shops get have to be assembled and adjusted before they are...

Great Bike
I searched for my wife a bike and everywhere I went, the price was way more than what I wanted to pay. I wanted a bike that was well constructed, lite, and has high rated parts on it. I found this bike and I compared the price with a comparable bike at a bike shop and it was nearly $100 cheaper, plus free shipping. After we received the bike, we were very satisfied of the product except for the seat, but you can purchase a nice gel seat for around $15. Great deal!
Bike is nice though did need some adjustments
I really like this bike...it is a great little starter 'road' bike. It can take some rougher terrain, but I wouldn't take it off roading constantly. I don't think it's built to tolerate a whole lot of that. After assembling the bike we did take it to our local bike shop and spent $10 on getting it adjusted just right...the gears weren't shifting right from lower 4th and 5th. They were getting hung up a little, but the shop fixed that right up. Seems something was bent a little. I also had the brakes adjusted as they were riding the rims of the wheels and they definitely weren't supposed to be that close! Nice bike for the price though and free shipping! Can't beat it!

FANTASTIC BUY
I bought this bike because it has great qualities for cheap. I knew that for the price that there had to be some things wrong with it, but I wanted the important features to be good. This is a very sturdy bike and I have had a great time riding it. For the cost, there is no bike better. I paid 278 on amazon with free shipping and everything. The bike is very easy to put together. I do suggest you get it tuned by a professional, however, because it took me a long time to tinker with the settings to make it run smoothly. I am very happy with everything about this bike, but there are a few things that may go undescribed.

1-The wheels are of very poor quality. The rubber seems really fake and if you are on concrete they skid out easily and leave a lot of rubber behind.

2-There is no place to put a water bottle holder or a hand pump. The rear suspension connects to the bottom bar of the frame and just under the top bar are the cables so there is no place to store a...

To answer some questions about the bike.
I bought the bike at the beginning of June 2011. These are my thoughts and may help you.

Short and simple.. an alright big box bike(idealy for someone 160#s or less), and at least it's not a bicycle shape'd object. Schwinn is owned by a company known as Pacific cycle company, made in China. With that out of the way... It's better than a 'mart bike.

1.) The shifters are decent, shimano entry level quality.

2.) A few things that everyone askes, what is the weight? The box it ships in weighs more than the bike, the bike IIRC weighed about 32-36#s.

3.) Front and Rear Derailluers are pretty good. Take the bike to a LBS(Local Bike Shop) for adjustments if you feel that adjusting it is over-welming. I adjusted mine, set the H/L limits shifters worked perfectly. Although I understand that adjustments are not easy for everyone, so if it seems too much LBS's will help you get it on the road/trail.

4.) I found it to be a common review...
Nice Bike
This is a sweat bike. My only complaint is the pedals are too close to the ground. Riding on trails they hit the ground when crossing a slope. Other than that its built very well.

Schwinn Volare S5460 is a nice Hybrid Bike
This is my first hybrid bike. It's basically a road bike with a flat handle bar, which was exactly what I was looking for. I had a BMX that was stolen so I decided to purchase this hybrid based on the brand and price. There were no reviews online for this bike to help influence me before I purchased it, that's why I'm submitting my first review. I watched a few videos online on how to assemble a road ride, which was helpful. Assembling the bike was easy, front wheel, handle bar, pedals and seat. Next, I pumped the tires to their correct air pressure and adjusted the seat for a comfortable fit. After that there was nothing else to do other than to give it a test ride. The gears and the brakes were easy to use and they needed no adjustments. The bike is very quite when pedaling. It is light weight and nice to ride. Schwinn Volare Hybrid Bike (700c wheels)
The short, I love this bike! I have bikes that cost more and to be honest this one works just as good if not better.First off, I love working on mechanical things, so I always get my bikes in a box. I like to know how it works and that it was put together correctly. I also like to use locktite (thread adhesive) on all the bolts to prevent loosening. I have put over 100 miles on this bike in a few weeks and after checking, nothing is loose. The bike rides and handles great, shifting is perfect and I didn't have to touch an adjustment so far, it was setup correctly right out of the box. Tires need to be kept hard, (mine had very little air when I received the box) that means checking the air pressure often as with all bikes. If you leave the pressure low, you could damage the rims and pinch the tubes. The seat is like every other street bike I have owned, thin but well padded. Love my new Schwinn Volare
The bike came well packed and it was easy to assemble,the last bike I owned was 20 years ago so I'm no expert in bikes, there was no major adjustments like I read on other reviews for other bikes that I liked, no need to take it to a professional for any adjustments or tunning the only thing I had to adjust was the front brakes which took me 5 minutes and it was easy,I pumped some air and it was ready to go, I love the color of the bike frame and the black rims and spokes, the only thing I might change is the saddle, its a little too narrow for me, otherwise I really like this bike and would highly recommend it.

Awesome bike!!!!!
I am 5'5" female and this bike is perfect! It is comfortable and a great height. I wanted the look of the cruisers, but wanted to be able to keep up with my husband while biking. This bike fits the bill perfectly - it has the mud guards and the cute back rack, but it can keep up too! There are a lot of gears, I don't change them too much, but I do like having them instead of just 1 or 3 options like a cruiser would offer. I've ridden this bike to work (~ 7 miles one way) and it was a great ride. The seat is comfortable too. I would highly recommend this bike if you want a cute, sophisticated bike that can ride well too.

Just know that you will have to take this to a bike shop unless you're a professional. It pretty much comes assembled, so my husband put it together, seemed easy enough - unfortunately he put the handle bars on backwards (looked normal to me! lol) and the fender in the front kept rubbing on the tires - also the gears felt weird and it was hard to pedal --...

awesome bike
I just finished assembling the bike. I love it! I have been looking for a comfy crusier style bike but versitale enough to go from trails to off roading. I biked 1/2 way up my super steep hill with no problem. The set up wasn't too hard. I have never worked on a bike before and with a few tools I was able to but on the front tire, pedals and handle bars. The seat is very comfortable. It was hard to decide on a bike online, but this is definately the right choice.
Lovely
This bike is lovely. I love the way it looks, it has an elegance and style not seen with mountain bikes or other hybrids. I have to sit up on it, gracefully, no crouching, this makes it more comfortable and therefore more likely to be ridden.
The shocks are perfect for the spring road terrain in Michigan after a hard winter. Potholes and debris are no match for the agility I possess with this bicycle. The saddle is very comfy, and the bike racks are handy. I like the white color as it is highly visible. The fenders keep me from getting the tell tale mud vein up and down my back after the wet of the road has been traveled through. I am very satisfied with this bike. Not since I was a kid on my first ten speed have I looked forward to riding a bike. I adore the hand grips, the way they fit my hands are lovely. easy assembly
It took all of 30 minutes to put the bike together. First thing I did was bring it to a bike shop and have them go through it. A well spent $30.00 in my opinion. My wife and I went out for a short ride to acclimate ourselves to the bikes. We had a good time. The shifting is solid and the brakes are firm. This bike seems to not want to be pedaled since it can coast for a long time. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a nice solid bike.

Arrived unusable, partially refunded but not enough
The bike came packaged with the handle bars crammed into the spokes which bent the front wheel significantly during shipping. The bikes looks nice sitting on it's kick stand but it is unrideable so I can't tell if there is any other problems. Very disappointing.

Update, next day: After a chat with customer service I was given the option of disassembling the bike, repackaging and shipping the entire bike back for a new one. All for a bent wheel. Or option 2 was to receive a partial refund of $30.00. I chose option 2 to avoid repackaging and shipping the whole bike back, and I will go to a bike shop to find a new wheel I guess. Still kind of a bummer.

I might bump this review up a star if the bike shop doesn't take me to the cleaners.

Update, later that day: According to every bike shop in my county it is going to cost me at least $75 to replace a 26" front wheel with quick release and disc brake. So, minus the $30 partial refund that Amazon...
Bought three for my sons
I bought three of these bikes for my triplet sons' birthday. They arrived well-packaged and there were very few parts to assemble. Each bike took about 30 minutes to put together. The bikes are great and well worth the money. I went to three bike shops before I bought these, and they seem to be a better quality for about $125 less for each bike (when you have to buy 3 bikes, that makes a big difference). A few slight adjustments to the gears and brakes, and they were ready to ride. My favorite feature is the disc brakes...they are smooth and stop at high speeds very well. The bikes are light and the gears transition well. I had read that the bikes are a little on the small side for each frame size, which is one of the reasons I bought them. I got the small frame which should be 16 inches. My sons are about 4'10" and the frame fits well with the seats in a low position and they just about clear the bar when standing. A sound investment!
At last I have come through the gauntlet of mountain bike buying, much scarred, but also much wiser!
I will try to briefly explain why I consider the Schwinn Rocket is a victory for me, and hopefully save other people much grief in choosing a "good" bike.
My experience in mountain bikes goes back to the early days of mountain bikes, but is based more realistically in the biking needs of four growing boys, and their middle aged parents. Like most I have largely purchased off-the-shelf box store bikes. Like most I have had more negative than positive experiences. I attempted over the years to upgrade to better bikes from the box store, but with little real world improvement. I have used bikes on the higher end, but cannot hope to buy such bikes for six people. What I wanted was a bike that would cost no more than twice what the box store offered. For this money I wanted a bike that offered at least twice the quality and reliability as well. What I found was the Schwinn Rocket...

Decent bike, but a defect and Terrible Customer Support
The good:
* This bike arrived undamaged, without missing parts, and with all sub-assemblies assembled properly. Final assembly was easy, and the gold swing-arm looked much better than the gray swing-arm in the photo. The suspension feels very nice, and the soft-tail makes a huge smoothness difference when riding. The shifters work well. I bought the "Large" size". I am 6' 6", and I needed a longer seat post, and a Delta Stem Rise to raise the handlebars (up three inches).

* A neighbor of mine who is more into bikes than I took this bike for a spin last night, and really liked it. He thought the handling was very good.

* I think this bike is reasonable value, and functions very well.

The bad:
* The right pivot bushing has excessive play. For those of you who may not know, these bushings act as hinges between moving frame sections near the rear axle. The back wheel wobbles slightly under side-load as a result. Upon removing the...
So far, so good
Finding a good quality mountain bike that won't cost an arm & a leg is a difficult task. I didn't know a lot about mountain bikes but wanted to replace my boyfriend's bike for Christmas. He'd had a Giant Iguana bike which he'd gotten for only $35 at a garage sale 10 years ago. The only thing he insisted on having was thumbshifter gears, not gripshifters because the bike would switch gears whenever he'd stand up to ride uphill. No doubt, Giant bikes are awesome, but new they were $1000 and up. This Schwinn bike seems to have all the specs he wanted/ needed: sturdy frame, thumbshifter gears, Shimano parts, 20" frame (large), 26" wheels, decent quality tires, a "guy friendly" seat, and easy assembly. Since Schwinn has been bought by Pacific Cycle, it's hard to say if this is a true Schwinn bike or one made by PC with the Schwinn label slapped on.
