Excellent Performance -- But Losing Lots of Spikes
I have been using Nokian Gaza Extremes on my 26er for several winters on local mountain bike trails here in Colorado, with a few miles of travel on asphalt each way to the trailhead. The Nokians did very well, and over a winter season with say 40 or 50 rides of 6-14 miles each I might replace a total of 50 or 60 studs on both tires. It is the nature of the beast that studs will come out of studded mountain bike tires when they are used on mountain bike trails. This year I bought a 29er bike and decided to try the Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro tires because, among other things, they have so many spikes (402 on each tire). I have done six rides of about 10 miles each now under winter conditions with the Schwalbe tires, and have discovered that while they perform very well indeed (and probably better than the Nokians), they have already lost 148 spikes from the front and rear tires. That's nearly 20% of the total number of spikes over six rides. At this rate I won't have any spikes left...

Incredible tire
It is my first winter tire with metal spikes and I am really impressed by it. Grip on ice and compacted snow is just incredible. Same about soil and rocks, however, you should note one issue: sudden and keen braking on any solid surface; like rocks, compacted ground, asphalt can easily get your bike out of control unless you take enough care, more then on regular tires. I noticed that braking path became longer as well. Be aware of its noise. As I said, I never rode metal spikes before and if neither you did, then expect everyone starring at you trying to understand where this metal knocking sound comes from. Also, bike roll becomes just terrible. You ll notice how much more effort you need to climb, but this is quite understandable due to nature of this tire

I suspect (however I cannot say for sure) these tires might have problems with durability. I lost two spikes at rear and 1 at front tire just after 2 weeks of moderate cycling. Tire walls are extremely thin ( probably,...
best of the lot
ouch on price, but it is by far the best of the ice and snow tires(i have tried). Less expensive than a wreck and injury by far so it is a great value really. After breaking in the squirm went away and it rode very smoothly for a studded tire. the other one I tried after breaking in still has the bumpity bumpity of a knobby studded tire after six months. Both do a wonderful job on ice.
